Strawberry Peak via Redbox Canyon
A challenging hike to the summit of Strawberry Peak.
One of the best summit hikes in the San Gabriels — a steady climb through chaparral to a rocky peak with views from the ocean to the desert.
Stops
Red Box Trailhead
Park along Red Box Road off CA-2 (Angeles Crest Highway). The pullout area has room for roughly a dozen cars. An Adventure Pass or America the Beautiful pass must be displayed on your dashboard. The trail begins across the road, heading north into the chaparral.
Strawberry Peak Summit
At 6,164 feet, the summit is a rocky scramble at the top with 360° views — the Pacific to the west, the San Gabriel Valley below, and the high desert beyond the ridge on clear days. The peak itself is a short Class 3 scramble off the main trail. Most hikers stop at the saddle just below if they’re not comfortable with exposed rock.
